[SPECIAL FEATURE] Aggression increases an athlete’s risk of injury
RESEARCH | The relationship between aggression, perceived risk of injury, and injury in combat sports and martial arts has been largely overlooked. This study aimed to explore aggression levels and perceptions of injury likelihood across combat sports. No significant differences were found between combat sports teams in anger, aggressiveness, total aggression, and perceived risk of injury. However, the males reported higher scores in aggressiveness. Injured athletes were also higher in the aggressiveness subscale. Participation in combat sports is not likely to increase aggression; hence, they are recommended for developing prosocial values and behavior in young people.

The book chapter written by Associate Dean Ralph Ramos and Professor Veerle De Bosscher is now out and available in the newly released Handbook on Sport and Culture (Edward Elgar, 2025).
Ramos and De Bosscher looked into the cultural foundations of elite sport systems using the Institutional Logics Perspective. They explained how globalisation and commercialisation make sport practices more similar across countries, while unique cultural, social, and historical contexts keep them distinct.
By studying how different institutions—the state, market, professions, corporations, and communities—interact, they showed how these forces shape elite sport policies and practices. They also presented a framework that connects these institutional influences with the key factors behind successful sport systems.
The book chapter highlights the need for sport policies that consider cultural differences and encourages more research on how culture affects elite sport systems.
