Joanna Franquelli has a diverse background in sports as an athlete, coach, and academic. As an athlete, she represented the Philippines in basketball and fencing, winning in various international competitions. As she transitioned to coaching, she focused on handball, using the long-term athlete development framework and a whole of system approach in developing the national team program. She has been tapped as a resource person and consultant for various sports programs by academic institutions and sports organizations. As an assistant professor, her current focus is on Sports Sociology and Coaching methods.

As a licensed international coach for Handball, Joanna Franquelli initiated a collaboration between UP CHK and the Philippine Handball Federation for a structured education program aimed at training P.E. teachers and youth coaches in the Philippines. Together with other CHK faculty, the Handball Education Program was conceptualized and has ongoing courses to serve the P.E. and sports community.
